Thursday's class

Thursday, we'll be doing our requisite post-assessment. Remember that concept test you took at the beginning of the semester? Basically, we'll take it again and see if you learned anything :-)

It should take about 20min, and there will be grade-related incentives for doing well.

We'll also go over a bit more thermodynamics (heat and energy), and leave some time for you to do some 'practice shots' for the rocket competition.

Something to consider when grading the post-assessments? Apparently, even professional physicists revert to naive intuition when predicting motion in some situations.

  3. Nice, it will take a while to digest all of that though.

I wish I could find that shocking, but I don't. I make mistakes on these concept tests too, it is too easy to try and apply your everyday intuition where it really doesn't belong.

For example, the assessment I'm giving you has a lot of questions where your intuition can trick you. I didn't ace it the first time I took it, and after the fact I realized it was mainly due to trying to use naive intuition when I should have trusted my training instead ...

Anyway, nice link, I think it is worth pointing out in class tomorrow as a motivator - these concept tests are in many ways much harder than calculations because you can trick yourself.
